Data Drop Panel August 2022
In August 2022, leading Privacy and Tech attorney Heidi Saas moderated a riveting session from special guests Jeff Jockisch (CEO, PrivacyPlan), Sameer Ahirrao (Founder & CEO, Ardent Privacy), and David Blaszkowsky (Head of Data Governance and Regulatory Affairs, Helios Data) on the latest noteworthy, concerning, and key developments pertaining to Data Privacy, Data Protection, and Data Governance.
The Data Drop:-
The Data Drop podcast and YouTube video series is a production of the Data Collaboration Community whose members access free privacy apps and crowdsource data-for-good projects within a 'zero-copy' digital hub. The show is published bi-weekly, alternating between 5-minute roundups of the latest data privacy news and a panel that features leading privacy pros in conversation about the recent news stories that made them sit up and take notice.
Here are thoughts of Sameer Ahirrao, Founder and CEO, Ardent Privacy in the panel:-
Mr. Sameer Ahirrao explained the importance of Data Hygiene. He emphasized that the enterprises are losing data in breaches, not only because they are under attack, but due to a lack of data hygiene and the absence of a data-centric security approach. He also explained data nationalization concept ( protecting information of citizens and keeping it local).
He emphasized the importance of consumer trust and how consumer trust will drive Privacy. Further, he mentioned that, as the privacy landscape is an emerging thing, it’s important to align the Privacy Program with the organization’s ESG (Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance) goal / program.
He also discussed why the U.S communications regulator wants TikTok removed from app stores over spying concerns, because of their deceptive practices calling it ship clothing. He expressed concerns about where the data is stored and from where it is accessed from a TikTok platform standpoint. For the unversed, India banned TikTok in 2020 for its deceptive videos.
When the discussion ensued on consent, he meticulously mentioned that consent should be specific and should be obtained and saved appropriately, instead of having one consent for multiple uses, without specific permission. From the PET (Privacy Enhancing Technology) perspective, he specifically mentioned that PET’s are still evolving, and PET’s cover a subset of data only, instead of entire / comprehensive data. Long and short of it is that PET’s have a lot of scope for innovation.
Mr. Sameer Ahirrao spoke about ADPPA (American Data Privacy and Protection Act) pertaining to mention of specific data elements the enterprises can collect . To combat and overcome the continuous challenges of adaptability, emanating from the evolving Privacy laws, he strongly recommended the adoption of the ‘Privacy by Design' (embedding Privacy during the inception phase), so enterprises are ready for new regulations and can avoid rework with new requirements.
