Learn how CIPM certification can make a difference in your organization and in your career

What is CIPM?

The CIPM – Certified Information Privacy Manager is the world's first and only certification in privacy program management. This certification helps implementing a privacy program framework, managing the privacy program operational lifecycle, and structuring a knowledgeable, high-performing privacy team regardless of jurisdiction or industry.

Why CIPM certification is important?
The major five reasons to pursue your CIPM certification:

  1. The CIPM is the global industry standard in privacy program management.
  2. Expertise the art to establish, maintain and manage a privacy program across all stages of its operational lifecycle.
  3. Experience the role of a privacy leader who drives the culture of privacy within your organisation.
  4. Augment your leadership profile among your colleagues.
  5. Secure the confidence that you have the essential tools and knowledge to boost your privacy program and add value across your organisation in both the public and private sectors.

Who Should think of pursuing CIPM Certification:
• Professionals responsible for integrating privacy requirements into day-to-day operations.
• CISO
• IT Managers
• Lawyers/Legal teams
• Data Innovation Officer

The job opportunities and careers for a person holding the CIPM certification is innumerable. At the time of writing this blog post, the following job advertisements specifically referenced the CIPM certification:

• EY is looking for a Data Protection & Privacy Risk Manager. Their ideal candidate has relevant experience, a Bachelor of Laws or Finance, and a CIPM (or similar) certification.
• Amazon is seeking a Senior Privacy Specialist, with proven experience in privacy, and a CIPM certification (or similar) is viewed favorably.

CIPM certification Exam pattern:
The CIPM exam consists of 70 scored multiple-choice items and 20 non-scored multiple-choice trial items, about half of which are scenario-based. You will have 2.5 hours to answer all questions. The passing score is 300 out of 500 possible points. There is no negative marking in the exam; we advise that you attempt all since any unanswered questions will get zero scores. You will get your results immediately after you complete the exam.
CIPM Certification Renewal
The CIPM credential is valid for two years. To maintain your credential, you must meet two minimum requirements over the term of your certification:
• Pay an annual certification maintenance fee (included in IAPP's membership fee).
• Fulfill 20 hours of continuing privacy education (CPE).

Conclusion:
Overall, achieving the Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM) credential demonstrates your understanding and ability to apply privacy and data protection practices in the development, measurement, and improvement of a privacy program, using a privacy program operational lifecycle.
